How Make Your Money Work For You

September 10, 2009

Many people struggle everyday to earn a living without ever asking a simple question - how can I make my money work for me? To understand how, you have to learn the three different types of income.

First, there is earned income. Earned income is what most of society makes in the form of a job.

Second, there is portfolio income. Portfolio income is the money that comes from owning stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.

Third, there is passive income. Passive income is money that comes from owning businesses, real estate, and intellectual properties. Intellectual properties are created works such as books, music, software, etc.

The problem with earned income is a simple one. If a person doesn’t go to work, they don’t make money. With portfolio income, you have ownership in a company and receive money from the profit of that company, or you lose money when that company loses money. Now for passive income. The path that many millionaires have taken from poverty to wealth is from this type of income. They started businesses in their spare time and became financially free. The power of passive income is leverage, which is the ability to do more and more with less and less. This is the secret of passive income. By simply doing something once, you could become rich. There is no limit on the amount of money you can earn from passive income.

To become financially free, all you have to do is turn your earned income into passive and/or portfolio income. If the money from those one or two types is more than your total expenses, you are financially free. You would no longer need to work for earned income. No more job. No more people bossing you around. No more worrying if you can pay your bills. Now that you know the three forms of income, I would like you to think about how you can turn your earned income into passive and portfolio income.
